As ballots go out to Denver voters, here are the mayoral candidates with the most money behind them

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:37:45 GMT

Polling has shown none of the 17 candidates for mayor breaking away from the pack with voters, but the latest campaign finance reports show a handful of hopefuls creating space when it comes to fundraising — and outside support.Ballots will start hitting Denver voters’ mailboxes this week for the April 4 municipal election. Two would-be mayors in particular, Kelly Brough and Mike Johnston, are significantly ahead of the field when it comes to total money backing their campaigns, at $1.71 million and $1.66 million, respectively. That’s thanks in large part to big donations pouring into independent expenditure committees that aren’t subject to city contribution limits.Leslie Herod is in the hunt in terms of direct contributions but lags the two in outside spending. Will that money make a difference as Brough, Herod and Johnston vie to make it into the June 6 runoff? That’s not a guarantee, longtime Denver political analyst Eric Sondermann said.“My ta...

Pac-12 WBB: Hotline picks for all seven NCAA Tournament first-round games

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:37:45 GMT

Twice, the Pac-12 has sent five teams to the Sweet 16.For that to happen in the 2023 NCAA Tournament would require some second-round upsets that seem unlikely, even for a league with the Pac-12’s depth. But all seven participants are favored by seed in the first round, with three of them playing at home. So the pertinent question is whether the Pac-12 can match its 2017 feat and send seven teams through to the second round.Going 7-for-7 on Friday and Saturday feels like a stretch to the Hotline, especially with a No. 8-No. 9 game and the dreaded 5-vs.-12 matchup in the lineup — not to mention No. 7 seed Arizona going into the postseason on a three-game losing streak.A total of six wins in the first round seems more likely, and it could take some nail-biting to win that many. (A 5-2 mark would be our second choice.)As for the second-round games scheduled for Sunday and Monday, anything less than three Sweet Sixteen teams would be a letdown for the Pac-12, although a UCLA-Oklahom...

WASHINGTON — Former U.S. Rep. Pat Schroeder, a pioneer for women’s and family rights in Congress, died Monday night. She was 82.Schroeder’s former press secretary, Andrea Camp, said Schroeder suffered a stroke recently and died at a hospital in Florida, the state where she had been residing.Schroeder took on the powerful elite with her rapier wit and antics for 24 years, shaking up stodgy government institutions by forcing them to acknowledge that women had a role in government. Her unorthodox methods cost her important committee posts, but Schroeder said she wasn’t willing to join what she called “the good old boys’ club″ just to score political points. Unafraid of embarrassing her congressional colleagues in public, she became an icon for the feminist movement.Schroeder was elected to Congress in Colorado in 1972 and became one of its most influential Democrats as she won easy reelection 11 times from her safe district in Denver. Despite her seniority, she was never appointed to he...
