For the first time in six years, the Avalanche will begin an NHL season away from home. The Avs will start the 2023-24 campaign on a three-game West Coast road swing, with opening night Oct. 11 (8 p.m. MT) at the Los Angeles Kings, followed by games in San Jose and Seattle. That means an early return to the hostile environment where Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar faced boos for the first time in his life during the 2022 playoffs. The Kraken eliminated the Avs in seven games. What jumps out to me more than the opener in L.A. is how early the #Avs revisit Seattle. I imagine that’s not enough time for Kraken fans to forget to boo Cale Makar. pic.twitter.com/HgXqiWjrFc— Bennett Durando (@BennettDurando) June 27, 2023Colorado’s home opener is Oct. 19 (8:30 p.m. MT) vs. Chicago, making this the second consecutive season the Blackhawks have been the Avalanche’s opponent on opening night at Ball Arena. By OLGA R. RODRIGUEZ (Associated Press)SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco could become the first city in the country to require every pharmacy within its boundaries to always carry naloxone, a drug that reverses overdoses caused by fentanyl and other opioids.San Francisco Supervisor Matt Dorsey will introduce a bill Tuesday that, if approved, would require every pharmacy to always have in stock at least two nasal sprays containing the drug or face fines. The city has struggled for years with rampant fentanyl use and fatal overdoses, and is on pace for its deadliest year yet. There were 647 accidental drug overdose deaths in San Francisco in 2022, and over 70% of those deaths were attributable to fentanyl, according to the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. In the first five months of 2023, preliminary reports show there were 346 overdose deaths in the city — an increase of more than 40% from the same period in 2022. More than 79% of those deaths were attri...Haley says Trump did ‘too little’ about China threats, warns of global conflict if Ukraine falls

By MEG KINNARD (Associated Press)COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley on Tuesday criticized former President Donald Trump for being too friendly to China during his time in office, while also warning that weak support for Ukraine would “only encourage” China to invade Taiwan. Haley, a Republican presidential candidate running against Trump, said in a speech at the American Enterprise Institute that Trump was “almost singularly focused” on the U.S.-China trade relationship but ultimately did “too little about the rest of the Chinese threat.”Specifically, Haley noted that Trump failed to rally U.S. allies “against the Chinese threat” and that he had congratulated Chinese President Xi Jinping on the 70th anniversary of Communist Party rule in China.“That sends a wrong message to the world,” Haley said. “Chinese communism must be condemned, never congratulated.”Haley’s comme...Klimt painting sets European record with $94 million price tag at Sotheby’s auction in London

A recent algae bloom has sickened animals on the Southern California coast, leading marine care centers to ask for help.In response, the Los Angeles Unified School District is stepping up to help a partner they've had since the 1980s.The district is providing the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro with temporary outdoor space. The newly available area allows the MMCC to treat more sea lions, as the emergency has created a need that outpaces the normal capacity, said MMCC CEO John Warner."We have 113 patients on site right now ... There are at least 75 animals on the beaches of L.A. County right now that are in need of care, and we are doing everything possible to provide the space to do just that," Warner said. LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the sickened marine mammals can experience "dehydration, seizures and, if not treated, even death" unless a focus is placed on "expanding facility space, providing the conditions for these sea lions to be treated." While the LAUS...Latest news
