REDWOOD CITY – A San Mateo County jury on Friday convicted a 44-year-old San Jose man of kidnapping and carjacking a Lyft driver in July, prosecutors said.After the victim picked him up in San Jose on July 16, the defendant, Randy Green Jay, pressed a knife to her stomach and ordered her to drive northbound on Highway 101, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.Prosecutors said Jay has mental health problems and repeatedly told the victim he was going to kill her. At one point, he called 911 and told dispatchers the victim was trying to kill him. When they asked him how, he laughed and canceled the call.Jay then forced the victim to follow a police car off the freeway in San Mateo, and when the vehicle came to a stop, she jumped out and ran, according to the district attorney’s office.Prosecutors said Jay drove off in the victim’s car. (KRON) -- The Milpitas Police Department's SWAT team was involved in a standoff that lasted more than 12 hours from Sunday night to Monday morning, MPD said. The SWAT team never located the suspect it was searching for. Police responded to a home on Spence Avenue at about 7:05 p.m. Sunday for a reported domestic violence incident. Responding officers saw the suspect in front of the house, police said. (KRON) -- A big rig caught fire on Interstate 80 Monday evening, slowing traffic on the highway, according to the Crockett-Carquinez Fire Department. Fire crews responded to westbound I-80 at Willow Avenue in the Rodeo/Hercules area. Images shared by the fire department showed firefighters working to extinguish the blaze. (BCN) -- Sonoma State University police are seeking the public's help in identifying a man suspected in a sexual assault last week. Police say the assault happened early in the morning on Sept. 3 in Tuscany Village, a Sonoma State University student residence. Police describe the suspect as a Latino man, 19 to 22 years old, with a medium-heavy build, black hair, a goatee and stubble. He is possibly over 6 feet tall, police reported. (KRON) – San Mateo Police arrested a Hayward resident, Ruben Polanco, for second-degree robbery on September 9. On the evening of September 7, San Mateo police were alerted of a shoplifting and assault at Hilldale Shopping Center’s Macy’s. According to the SMPD, the male suspect grabbed multiple perfume bottles and placed the bottles in a plastic bag. Once the suspect became aware that loss prevention was trailing him, he dropped several bottles. However, Polanco still had unpaid items leaving the store, police said.
