The first round of the abbreviated City Series between the Cubs and White Sox on Tuesday and Wednesday coincides with the start of Bears training camp, a Bermuda Triangle of madness for the Chicago media.Which way to go?The Yin of lost baseball dreams playing out on the South Side vs. the Yang of summertime Bears optimism in tony Lake Forest. You make the call.In truth, when push comes to shove, the Bears will always win out when it comes to media coverage, leaving the Cubs-Sox series as an afterthought. That’s a shame, because this year’s Crosstown Classic, as everyone except this newspaper calls the rivalry (don’t ask why), figures to be more interesting than ever. With the Aug. 1 trade deadline approaching, the focus has shifted from our underachieving teams to the two men currently most responsible for trying to fix things — Cubs president Jed Hoyer and White Sox general manager Rick Hahn.Space limitations prohibit us from mentioning every Cubs and Sox play...Germany’s opposition leader faces criticism over his comments on cooperation with the far right

BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s opposition leader insisted on Monday that there will be no “cooperation” at the local level between his party and the far-right Alternative for Germany after his apparent suggestion that they might work together caused unease within his own conservative bloc.Friedrich Merz’s center-right Christian Democratic Union has long said it won’t work with Alternative for Germany, or AfD, which has drifted steadily further right. Merz reiterated Sunday that there would be no cooperation in the national, state or European parliaments with AfD, which recently has surged in polls. But he was more equivocal in a ZDF television interview about the situation at town and county level, after the first AfD candidates recently won elections in eastern Germany to lead a county administration and become the full-time mayor of a municipality. Those were democratic elections that “we have to accept,” Merz said. “And then of course ways have to be sought in local pa...Israeli parliament approves key part of Netanyahu’s judicial overhaul as opposition exits chamber

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Former New Hampshire U.S. Sen.
