AP PHOTOS: Mongolia’s herders fight climate change with their own adaptability and new technology SUKHBAATAR, Mongolia (AP) — For millennia, herders in Mongolia and their animals have lived and died together in the country’s vast grasslands, slowly shaping one of the last uninterrupted ecosystems of its kind. And at first glance, everything appears the way it may have looked all those years back. A herder watches attentively as a horse gave birth on a cold spring morning. Families look for pastures for their animals to graze. Gers — traditional insulated tents made with wooden frames — still face east and the rising sun, as they have for nomads since the days of Genghis Khan. But climate change is altering everything: Since 1940, the country’s government says, average temperatures have risen 2.2 degrees Celsius (nearly 4 degrees Fahrenheit). With the increase comes the threat of pastures being eaten away by an encroaching desert and water sources drying out. And dzuds — natural disasters unique to Mongolia caused by droughts and severe, snowy winters — have grown harsher an...

LSU QB Jayden Daniels brings burgeoning Heisman hopes into Georgia State clash BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has two chances left to show why a quarterback on a team with three losses and virtually no hope of challenging for a national title deserves the Heisman Trophy. The first of those comes Saturday night in Death Valley when the 15th-ranked Tigers (7-3, No. 15 CFP) host Georgia State (6-4).Second-year LSU coach Brian Kelly this week called Daniels “clearly a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy,” adding, “He’s the most exciting football player individually in the country.”Daniels not only has gaudy statistics, but has accumulated them in spectacular fashion, be it with deep throws down field or long, weaving scoring runs.In a 52-35 victory over Florida last week, Daniels posted an SEC-record 606 total yards (234 rushing, 372 passing), highlighted by his touchdown runs of 85 and 51 yards and his 37-yard scoring pass to Brian Thomas. That performance made Daniels the first player in Football Bowl Subdivision history with at leas...

Enrique Pepén broke state law by promoting fundraiser on personal social media account: OCPF Incoming Boston City Councilor Enrique Pepén cited a “lapse of judgement” Thursday as the reason for violating state law by using a personal social media account to advertise a campaign fundraiser and solicit donations while he was still a public employee.Pepén, who served as a City Hall employee until this summer and was endorsed by Mayor Michelle Wu, claimed victory last week in a competitive race for the District 5 seat that also featured outgoing Councilor Ricardo Arroyo as a candidate.Campaign finance officials said Pepén used his personal social media account in the two weeks leading up to a June 22 campaign kickoff fundraiser to publish six posts advertising the event, inviting people to attend, and soliciting contributions all while he was still a city employee.“Based upon our review, we have concluded that your distribution via social media of a fundraising invitation did not comply with (campaign finance law).
